“…truly tremendous verve…”
Organists’ Review
Richard Pinel is a prize-winning organist whose playing has been hailed as ‘a force of nature’. His CD, L’Orgue Symphonique, was praised for its ‘electrifying impact’ and ‘truly tremendous verve’, and he won the First Prize and both special prizes at the Breda International Organ Competition. Recitals have taken him across the UK, notably to King’s College, Cambridge and St John’s, Smith Square, and further afield to Europe and the USA.
Richard is a Professor of Organ at the Royal Academy of Music and Director of Music at St Mary’s, Bourne Street in Belgravia. He is, at present, Acting Director of Music at King’s College London, a pianist and répétiteur for ensembles including the BBC Singers, and a member of the teaching staff at Eton College. He is a regular tutor on Oundle for Organists courses.
Hailing from Northampton, where he was a chorister and later organ scholar at All Saints’ Church, Richard was awarded the organ scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford in 2002. During this time, the Grammy-nominated college choir undertook several recording projects with Harmonia Mundi, on which his playing first drew that acclaim. He went on to be Assistant Director of Music at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, and then Director of Music at Jesus College, Cambridge (2017–2022), where he made the world premiere recording of Grayston Ives’ Requiem with Jesus College Choir and Britten Sinfonia (Signum Records), which entered the classical charts in the top ten. He previously held the organ scholarship at St Albans Cathedral and, from 2017 to 2021, was Director of the Edington Festival.
